One of the distinguishing features of a mosque or house of prayer is its location. Some mosques and houses of prayer are built on mountain slopes, hilltops, or even mountain peaks. This offers tourists, including climbers, breathtaking views of high mountains, seas of clouds, and/or the surrounding nature .
Before TravelPlus Indonesia reveals which mosques and prayer rooms offer panoramic views of mountainous landscapes, cloudy seas and/or natural beauty, it would be useful to first understand what factors contribute to the large number of mosques and prayer rooms with mountain views in Indonesia.
According to TravelPlus Indonesia, there are at least two reasons for this. First, Indonesia's Muslim population is expected to grow to over 240 million by early 2026, representing approximately 87% of the total population. In other words, Islam is the dominant religion in this popular country.
The number of Muslim places of worship, especially mosques and prayer rooms, is also considerable. According to the Mosque Information System (SIMAS) of the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs, the number of officially registered mosques and prayer rooms in Indonesia was 707,317 as of January 2026. Including unregistered mosques, this number is estimated at over 800,000 . This makes Indonesia one of the countries with the most mosques in the world.
The second factor is that Indonesia has a mountainous topography and is a significant part of the Pacific Ring of Fire , with around 127 active volcanoes on the islands of Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Bali and Nusa Tenggara.
Many cities and towns are located on or near the foothills of mountains. Therefore, many mosques and prayer rooms were also built on or near these foothills, serving as places of worship and offering beautiful views of the mountains, mist, and other natural beauties.
Based on direct observations by TravelPlus Indonesia and data from various sources, it can be said that there are at least dozens of mosques and prayer halls with mountain views in the region.
First, the Baitut Takua Mosque . It is located in Butuh village, Temangung municipality, Kaliangkrik subdistrict, Magelang prefecture, Central Java, and has three unique characteristics due to its location.
The first advantage is the possibility of staying overnight in the village. This mosque is called "Nepal wan Java" and for this reason it is often called the "Nepal wan Java" mosque.
The second special feature is that Butuh village is the highest village in the Kingdom of Magelang and lies at the foot of Mount Sumbing, so the Baitut Takua Mosque in the village offers a beautiful view of Mount Sumbing in the background.
The third unique feature of the mosque is its location at the foot of Mount Sumbing, near the base camp for climbing Sumbing via Kaliangkreek. Since it is close to residential buildings, the mosque is often shrouded in fog and the interior is cool, so it does not require air conditioning.
According to TravelPlus Indonesia , many tourists visiting Nepal and Java also visit the Baitut Takua Mosque for obligatory and voluntary prayers. The same goes for climbers, both before and after their climb.
Second, the Al-Baroka Mosque . This mosque, located in village number 4 of Pagar Alam (Sumsel), has at least three special characteristics.
The first feature of this mosque, although it is quite small (similar to a prayer hall), is the impressive view it offers, with Mount Dempo in the background.
The second advantage is its proximity to the base camp for climbing Mount Dempo from Kampung 4. It can be said that it is still part of the base camp complex.

The third feature is its proximity to large tea plantations, which further increases its attractiveness.
Observations by TravelPlus Indonesia show that, in addition to locals, many climbers also perform the obligatory communal prayers at the mosque before or after their climb.
Third, the mosque. The Torikul Huda Mosque, located in Angkrungondok Village, Reko Village, Kertek Subdistrict, Wonosobo Regency, Central Java, also has several special features, including its proximity to the base camp for climbing Mount Sindoro. Alang-alang Sewu. This large and truly majestic mosque is located at the foot of Mount Sindoro and is often covered in fog and cold air.
TravelPlus Indonesia noted that although there is a prayer room at the Alanlang Sewu base camp, many climbers prefer to pray at the Torikul Huda Mosque, as it offers more comfortable conditions.
Fourth place goes to the Jabal Nur Hidayatullah Mosque . It is located in Puncak Village, Argosari Village, Senduro Subdistrict, Lumajang Regency, East Java. This mosque is distinguished by several unique features, including its location on the Tengger Plateau, over 2,000 meters above sea level, which often results in the area being covered in fog and cold air. It is also considered the highest mosque on the island of Java.
Furthermore, this mosque offers a fascinating view of the mountains, more precisely of the typical terraced fields of Tengger, with Mount Semeru in the background, as well as Mount Mahameru, the peak or roof of Java.
Fifth, the Al-Ikhlas Mosque . Located in the middle of a plantation next to the main road in Buluharjo Village, Plaosan District, Magetan District, East Java, it is no less extraordinary.
This mosque, often known as the White Dome Mosque, offers a beautiful view of Mount Lawu and Mount Mongkrang in the background.
The mosque on top of the mountain
The sixth mosque, the Sunan Muriah Mosque , is unique in that it is located in the Muriah Mountains in Kolo Village, Daweh District, Kudus Governorate, Central Java.
The Seventh Great Mosque of South Solok. It is located in the PT Mitra Kerinci tea growing region in the Sangir district of South Solok province in West Sumatra and has several unique features, including the name Great Mosque of Tea Plantations because it is located on a tea plantation.
It also offers a beautiful view of Mount Kerinci, the highest volcano in Indonesia, and the roof of Sumatra.
Eighth : Darussalam Grand Mosque Koto Bharu . This mosque is located on the main road between Padang Panjang and Bukittinggi, near the Koto Bharu Market, Nagari Koto Bharu, Koto District 10, Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra. It also has some unique features.
In addition to the cluster of domes that look like reddish betel nuts, this mosque offers a view of Mount Singalang in the background.
According to TravelPlus Indonesia, many climbers visit this mosque to pray with others before or after climbing Mount Singalang or Mount Marapi.
The ninth mosque, Nurul Huda Mosque , is located in Bambangan Village, Kutabawa Village, Karangreya Subdistrict, Purbalinga District, Central Java. It boasts several unique features, including its proximity to the starting point of the Slamet climbing route, which passes through Bambangan, Kutabawa, and Purbalinga. This makes it a popular place for climbers to pray together before and after their climbs.
Another special feature is that, since the mosque is located on the main climbing route to Mount Slamet, it offers a direct view of the majestic Mount Slamet.
Tenth , it is said that mosques are located above the clouds. An example of this is the Jami Aminatul Jannah Mosque in the Sumber Jaya recreational area in West Lampung, Lampung.
Next is the Al Ikhlas Mosque , located at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level in the mountains of Bukit Tabuan village in the Karangasem district of Bali, and is the highest mosque on the Island of the Gods.
Another example is the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Mosque , a tourist attraction on top of Mount Luhur in Lebak Regency, Banten Province.
Prayer room on the mountain
Point eleven: a prayer room in the mountains. For example. Among them is the Gunung Talang Mosque, located in Gunung Talang Square, which is often called the "football field". It lies at an altitude of 2,500 meters above sea level, just a few hundred meters from the peak of Mount Talang, and is accessible via a hiking trail from Aya Batumbuak in Gunung Talang District, Solok Regency, West Sumatra.
The prayer room, measuring 2.4 x 3.5 meters, is considered the highest prayer place in West Sumatra and even on the entire island of Sumatra.
The next is the Jabalussalam Mosque , also known as the Mount Slamet Mosque . Construction began on August 21, 2021, and the mosque is located at an altitude of 2,500 meters above sea level, at point 4 of the Permadi-Guci road, on Mount Slamet in Tegal Regency, Central Java.
Also in Marongan village, Sukomakmur, Kajoran district is the Baiturrahim Mosque. This building is still located at the foot of Mount Sumbing, at an altitude of approximately 1,300 meters above sea level.
The presence of mosques and prayer rooms at the foot, on the slopes and/or at the top of a mountain not only makes life easier for locals, but also for tourists and even climbers who wish to fulfill their Muslim obligations before or after climbing the mountain.
