Currently, some regions of Java and several other larger islands are experiencing the peak of the 2025/2026 rainy season. For those wishing to travel during this period, with slightly above-average rainfall, domestic tourism seems like a good option.
Before TravelPlus Indonesia presents the different types of tourism, activities and places, it is best to first understand what domestic tourism is.
As its name suggests, domestic tourism refers to tourist activities that take place indoors.
The term national tourism can be applied to various types of tourism, such as urban tourism, shopping tourism, gastronomic tourism, cultural tourism, historical tourism, religious tourism, leisure tourism (music, cinema, etc.) and sports tourism.
Domestic tourism encompasses various types of tourism within cities, such as stays in hotels, resorts, villas and other types of accommodation, utilizing existing facilities.
Among the activities that can be done during the holidays, there are some beneficial for maintaining health, such as practicing relaxing sports like swimming, going to the gym, walking or jogging quietly on the jogging track in the garden of the hotel or resort, yoga, aerobics, zumba and others.
You can also enjoy relaxing activities such as massages, spa treatments, and much more. Other ways to unwind include watching your favorite movies, browsing social media, and creating entertaining videos with the free Wi-Fi . If you prefer, you can savor the culinary delights of the Testo restaurant or enjoy a coffee in the hotel's café.
For this, it is recommended to choose a hotel/resort of at least three stars, with special features such as beautiful views, with panoramic views of the beach, the sea, the lake, the river, the rice paddies, the valleys, the hills, the mountains and/or the city lights at night.
If you choose a budget hotel, don't expect all these amenities. Instead, you can visit nearby attractions such as cafes, restaurants, shopping centers, souvenir shops, and much more.
Before booking a hotel, check its location and make sure it's strategically situated and easily accessible by public transport or car. Also, read reviews from other guests and check ratings on different booking platforms to get a better idea of the hotel.
Domestic tourism, like shopping, can be considered a type of tourism. It's even better if the shopping center is located in a popular tourist area and close to the chosen accommodation.
In this modern shopping center, you can enjoy a variety of indoor activities, such as shopping for clothes and shoes, going to the movies, sampling culinary delights, singing karaoke, visiting beauty salons, and much more. You can also browse the souvenir shops.
On the other hand, domestic gastronomic tourism refers to eating in restaurants, cafes or food stalls in shopping centers or palaces, or drinking coffee in cafes, which must also be located in tourist areas.
Besides a delicious menu, if possible, you should choose a restaurant/café with unique features in terms of concept, design, and views, for example, one on Lake Toba, a restaurant/café with mountain views like in Dieng or Wonosobo, a restaurant/café located in a pine/teak forest, a restaurant/café on the riverbank like in Pandeglang, a restaurant/café with views of the sea and/or city lights like in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, Bandar Lampung, and others.
Another example: if you travel to Banda Aceh, having coffee in different cafes should definitely be on your list of culinary experiences.
The capital of Aceh province is home to a large number of cafes, coffee shops, and restaurants that also function as large coffee shops and have all the amenities, such as large flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and much more, so you can comfortably stay for a while with a coffee .
Domestic tourism includes going to the movies, attending concerts, and participating in tourism fairs or fashion shows, all in enclosed spaces. An example of this type of venue is the Jakarta International Convention Center in Senayan.
Artistic and cultural tourism includes visiting art galleries, seeing Wayang Orang performances, attending art exhibitions, watching theatrical performances, etc. On the other hand, domestic tourism in the educational sector includes visits to museums, for example, the Fatahillah Museum in Jakarta, the Vredeburg Castle Museum in Yogyakarta, and other museums.
As mentioned earlier, closed tourist attractions can also be established for urban sightseeing, gastronomy, shopping, entertainment, art, and various types of culture and education in already well-known tourist areas, such as Malioboro Street and its surroundings in Yogyakarta, Braga Street in Bandung, and/or Surya Kencana Street and its surroundings in Bogor.
Domestic tourism in the field of religious tourism includes the exploration of mosques, especially those with unique characteristics in terms of history, architecture or other aspects.
Possible activities include performing Sunnah prayers, obligatory congregational prayers, participating in studies, I'tikaf, Tadarusan, Dhikr and Salawat, recording the mosque's architectural features for video content, and delivering donations and alms to charitable funds.
In Banda Aceh, for example, you can visit the Baiturrahman Mosque. In Jakarta, the Istiqlal Mosque is a good option; in Surabaya, the Sunan Ampel Mosque; in Yogyakarta, the Kauman Mosque; and in Bandung, the Al-Imtizaj Mosque, with its typical Chinese temple architecture, near Jalan Braga.
Domestic historical tourism involves visiting cultural heritage sites or historical locations. In Jakarta, for example, this includes the Old City; in Semarang, Kota Lama; in West Sumatra, Sawahlunto; and in Bandung, the Asia and Africa districts, as well as Braga.
On the other hand, indoor sports tourism includes swimming, tennis, and padel in indoor facilities. Examples of these facilities can be found in Jakarta and other major cities.
In summary, this inner journey can be undertaken alone (as an individual traveler) or in small groups (3 to 5 people), with friends who travel frequently or with a small family (father, mother and 1 or 2 children).
In short: even though the rainy season is in full swing, travel is still possible and enjoyable, especially with indoor tourist activities. I hope this has been helpful 🙏.
